Grootfontein Agricultural Colledge

The Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute is rich in history and is situated about 5km outside the Karoo Town of Middelburg, Eastern Cape. On its premises it also hosts a section of the Eastern Cape Province Veterinary Services, Agricultural Research Council Fleece Testing Centre and the Director Technical Services from the Department of Agriculture Northern Cape dealing with Soil Conservation.  In 2001 The College was evaluated by the HEQC (Higher Education Quality Committee).   This means that students who attain their certificates and diplomas, may further their qualifications (e.g.| B.Tech), including degrees at certain Technikons.

Grootfontein's history goes back to 1903 when the British department of War purchased certain portions of the farms Grootfontein, Leeufontein, Bultfontein and De Poort for the purpose of establishing a military camp and training centre for British troops.

These are a few that can be visited today:

The Officers' Mess

House Karoo was erected in 1903 as a mess for officers serving in the British garrison stationed at Grootfontein till 1910. Hereafter it served as a hostel for hundreds of Grootfontein Students.

PW VORSTER MUSEUM
